What is Periodontal Disease?
Periodontal diseases are those which occur in the gums and bones and leave you with a far from perfect smile. At Heritage Oak Dental, we believe in spreading smiles by tackling the various symptoms of periodontal diseases and restoring the health of your natural teeth and gums.
These symptoms include:
Bleeding gums while brushing and flossing
Swollen gum tissue
Food entrapment between the teeth
If any of these symptoms are not treated in time, it can result in the loss of teeth due to worsening of the condition. If you are experiencing any of the above symptoms, it is highly recommended that you immediately see your dentist at Heritage Oak Dental. For minor symptoms, which only require deep cleaning and other non-surgical treatments, schedule an appointment and we will ensure a complete clean-up is done. We will numb the area to provide you maximum comfort and minimum pain before commencing the clean up with one of our highly trained hygienists. A deep clean ensures that the tartar, plaque build-up and disease-causing bacteria are completely removed. Your dental team will then give you a strict oral hygiene plan to follow and prevent further instances of periodontal diseases.
Periodontal disease is caused by a combination of many factors including poor oral hygiene and lack of professional dental care, which is why we advise our patients to have regular dental checkups and cleaning performed at our Heritage Oak Dental clinics.
Types of Treatments
There are two kinds of periodontal treatments provided at Heritage Oak Dental -surgical and non-surgical.
Non-surgical treatments include tray-delivery systems, deep cleaning and scaling and root planing. Tray-delivery systems are similar to fluoride delivery systems and consist of a custom-fit tray made by taking impressions of the mouth used to deliver medication to each individual tooth. Scaling and root planing is the process of carefully cleaning the root surfaces to remove the tartar and bacterial build up. This process is sometimes followed by adjunctive therapy consisting of antimicrobials and antibiotics.
Surgical treatments for periodontal disease include gum grafting, laser therapy, regenerative procedures and periodontal pocket reduction procedures. Gum grafting is a process of surgically grafting a piece of the gum onto the site where the gum has diminished and exposed the tooth due to gum recession. Laser therapy serves the same function as scaling and root planing and works to reduce the tartar build-up on the teeth. Regenerative procedures involve the folding back of the gum to expose the bacterial build up over the tooth which is thoroughly cleaned. Then regeneration of the deteriorated bone and tissues is initiated by using membranes, filters and tissue-stimulating proteins.
